Congress-DMK coup d'etat in PAC on 2G

PTI / Thursday, April 28, 2011 19:28 IST Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today described as a shameful day for Indian democracy, the 'virtual coup d'etat"carried out by Congress and DMK in the Public Accounts Commitee on the 2G spectrum issue. He said the election of Saifuddin Soz as PAC "chairman" was a "blatant violation" of parliamentary procedure and urged the president to dissolve Parliament and hold fresh elections. "The virtual coup d'etat carried out by Congress with DMK in tow is a shameful day for India's parliamentary democracy," Swamy said. The election of Soz as 'chairman' of PAC is a blatant violation of parliamentary procedures for chairman of the PAC,' he said in a statement here after 11 of the 21 PAC members had rejected the draft report. AI sacks six ICPA leaders

Taking a tough stand against striking pilots, Government on Wednesday ruled out any negotiations on their demand of pay parity. Briefing reporters in New Delhi, Civil Aviation Minister Vyalar Ravi said that a fraction of pilots' association cannot dictate terms to the government. He asserted that the government has asked Air India to take firm action against the striking pilots as their decision to go on strike is irresponsible. He said that Government will support every action taken by the Air India management to control the situation. While urging all employees of Air India to cooperate in dealing with the financial crisis, Mr Vyalar Ravi said that the national carrier is getting support from all sections of employees and different committees are looking into the demands of over 41000 employees.Air India CMD, Arvind Jadhav accused them of being insensitive towards the convenience of the passengers. States combating corruption

1) Two States with the highest number of registered cases also had poor rates of conviction. Maharashtra had the highest number of cases registered (4,566) with a conviction rate of 27%. Recovery or seizure of property from the accused was a measly Rs. 9.1 crore. Rajasthan had the second highest number of registered cases at 3,770 with a conviction rate of 1/3rd. Recoveries stood at a mere Rs. 9.7 crores. 2) Some members of the infamous BIMAROU group seem to have done better than others in combating corruption. Bihar with 617 cases registered had the highest conviction rate at 78%. Property worth Rs. 14.5 crores had been recovered or seized from the accused. Between 2005 and 2007 the conviction rate was 100%. The conviction rate fell to 60% in 2009 but property worth Rs. 7.8 crores was recovered during the same year- the highest during the decade. 3) Madhya Pradesh also had a higher conviction rate at 50% (1,257 cases registered) and recoveries worth Rs. 36.2 crores. 4) Orissa

Draft discussions on Jan Lok Pal bill

Lokpal exists in the system and there is a 3-tier structure. 1) Lokpal at central Level ,Central policies and departments. 2) Lokayukta at State level,state policy and department. 3) Upa Lokayukta at district level. What ever may be the Lokpal/Lokayukta decision,that can be challenged in the Courts. They can go to High Court in the case of Lokayukta, Supreme court in the case of Lokpal.Judiciary is the final. Lokpal bill thus from arbitrary must take form of powers of another judiciary and needs to have some teethes for the corrupts to be punished.

US President Barack Obama has condemned Syria's "outrageous" use of violence against anti-government demonstrators, accusing the regime of seeking Iran's aid to quell the rebellion."Instead of listening to their own people, President Assad is blaming outsiders while seeking Iranian assistance in repressing Syria's citizens through the same brutal tactics that have been used by his Iranian allies," Obama said in a statement.Obama said the US continues to oppose Syrian government's destabilising behaviour, including support for terrorism and terrorist groups.
