Cold wave hits North India

Cold wave conditions have returned to North India. Shimla experienced its coldest night in four years yesterday with the mercury settling at minus 3.3 deg C, five notches below normal. Our Correspondent reports that all roads beyond Shimla were blocked due to heavy snow while traffic to Manali, Dharamshala and Chail was disrupted because of slippery roads.

The Kashmir Valley is also in the grip of an intense cold wave with the temperature coming to a record low of minus 16.1 deg C in Pahalgam, resulting in partial freezing of the Dal lake and other water bodies in Jammu and Kashmir.

Winds brought back chill in the air in the national capital Delhi with the day temperature dropping to 18.2 deg C, three degrees below normal.

The Cold wave claimed has two more lives in Uttar Pradesh, one each in Hardoi and Devria. More from our correspondent;

Judicial enquiry ordered into Sabarimala stampede,

A judicial enquiry has been ordered in to the death of 102 Sabarimala pilgrims in Kerala in a stampede. 80 other devotees have been injured in the stampede at Uppupara on the Pullumedu-Vallakadavu forest route in Idukki district, while they were returning after holy darshan at the shrine of Lord Ayyappa on Makar Sankranti day on Friday night. The stampede was reportedly caused when a jeep ran off the road hitting an auto-rickshaw triggering panic among the pilgrims.
