Miss America Nina Davuluri at White House19102013 Updated on : 17-10-2013 02:09 PM US President Barack Obama hosted a very special guest at the White House, Nina Davuluri, the first Miss America of Indian-Origin, despite the high drama surrounding a deal to end the government shutdown. “Had the pleasure of having a conversation with President Barack Obama in the Oval Office today!” an ecstatic Davuluri twitted shortly after meeting Obama on Wednesday. “Miss America participated in a group photo with the President in honour of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital Champions,” a White House official said.
“Following the photo, she briefly visited the Oval Office,” the official said.
Davuluri, 24, was the first Indian-American to win the coveted beauty pageant last month.
Incidentally, Obama had referred to Davuluri during his meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in Washington last month.

He was addressing officers attending Phase-V of mid-career training programme and also officers trainees of IAS, IPS, IFS and Royal Bhutan Civil Service attending 88th foundation course at Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie at Mussoorie today (October 18, 2013).

US Senate votes to end shutdown17102013
Updated on : 17-10-2013 08:43 AM Less than four hours before the midnight deadline, the United States’ Senate voted 81-18 the legisation to end a 16-day government shutdown and avert a catastrophic debt default.  The bill will fund the government through 15th January, 2014 and averts default through 7th February, during which time it can work toward a long-term budget agreement that prevents these frequent crisis.  The US President, Barack Obama, said he would sign the legislation immediately after it is passed by the House of Representatives.  “The Senate has now voted to approve this agreement, and Democrats and Republicans in the House still have an important vote to take, but I want to thank the leaders of both parties for getting us to this point. Once this agreement arrives on my desk, I will sign it immediately,” Obama told reporters at the White House.  He said the US will start reopening the government right away. “We’ll begin reopening …

New flights to connect the world’s fastest growing economies and major global airport hubs American Airlines announced it will launch new international service from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport to Hong Kong and to Shanghai in the summer of 2014, marking DFW’s first-ever flights into Hong Kong and China. Americans bag Nobel for Economics15102013 Nobel Economics Prize  US trio Lars Peter Hansen, Eugene Fama and Robert Shiller won the Nobel Economics Prize today for groundbreaking work on spotting trends in asset markets, the jury said.  The three “have laid the foundation for the current understanding of asset prices. It relies in part on fluctuations in risk and risk attitudes, and in part on behavioural biases and market frictions,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said.  Fama and Hansen are both professors at the University of Chicago, while Shiller is a professor at Yale University in Connecticut.  The economics prize is the only Nobel not originally included in the last will and testament of the prizes’ creator, Swedish scientist and philanthropist Alfred Nobel.  It was established in 1968 by the Swedish central bank to celebrate its tri-centenary, and first awarded in 1969.
