PM Sheikh Hasina rejects talks
Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has rejected calls for talks, and said her government would sue BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for instigating, patronising and financing the on-going violence in the country which has left over 60 people dead. Describing the arson and killings as not politics but terrorism, Hasina said all measures would be taken to try those involved in fire-bombing and arson.
The Law Minister has already been asked to set up a speedy trial course for the purpose. On a visit to the burn unit of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital where most victims are being treated, she also warned civil society members who make provocative and instigating remarks on television talk-shows.
Meanwhile the garment industry, transport owners, bankers and insurers have decided to go on a hunger strike on Saturday demanding an end to the political unrest inflicting great damage to their businesses.
