Globalization and the new entanglements of geopolitics with geoeconomics
13022014
The Centre for Policy Research is delighted to invite you to a talk by
PROF. MATTHEW SPARKE
Professor of Geography and International Studies,
Adjunct Professor of Global Health
Adjunct Professor of Global Health
and
Director, Integrated Social Sciences
University of Washington, Seattle, USA
on
Globalization and the new entanglements of geopolitics with geoeconomics
Chair: Prof Nimmi Kurian
Date: Monday, 17 February 2014
Time: 11:00 am -12:30 pm
Venue: Conference Room, Centre for Policy Research, Dharma Marg,
Chanakyapuri, New Delhi –110021
In this talk, Professor Sparke will engage with the idea of how globalization and the shrinking of distance have not led to the end of geography; instead, they have led to uneven development and diverse forms of reterritorialization. Examples of such reterritorialization range in scale and type from the redefinition of geopolitical conflict zones to the promotion of global cities as sites for inward investment, to the creation of local landscapes of stark inequality. One of the broadest scales at which this sort of unevenness and inequality becomes evident is in the world of international relations: the world of struggles over territory and security that is commonly conceptualized today in terms of geopolitics and geoeconomics.
The talk will review these global mechanics of unevenness by distinguishing zones of danger, disconnection, and conflict from areas of market integration, around the case of Novartis vs Union of India. In this case,Novartis challenged the Indian patent office’s rejection of its application for patenting Gleevec, a drug for treating chronic forms of leukemia. The Supreme Court of India upheld decision of the patent’s office.
Brief Bio:
DrMatthew Sparke is a professor of geography and international studies at the University of Washington. NEW DELHI OF EVERYDAY: LANES, MONUMENTS AND GARDENS
Heritage walk and talk by Robinson
“In a time in the city when all seem to be short of time, it is important to pause and reflect on the rich legacy which we have inherited – willingly/unwillingly. It is this pausing which enables us to understand, reflect and comprehend the time that has gone by. This walk and talk has been conceived with the idea of looking at the obvious that we take granted for, walk down memory lanes literally, see the same things in a new light with appreciation of the rich tangible and intangible heritage that we have been fortunate to have. The walk will unravel different layers of the rich history of Delhi. Let me invite you to empirically experience and be part of this living history.”
quotes Robinson
Robinson, an alumnus of St.Stephen’s college, Delhi is a theologian, poet, meditation practitioner, heritage walks expert and an art critic. He describes himself as a traveler in life who intends to journey well. He has been documenting the city, the known and the unknown for the last two decades.
