Bloom, Stone capture Hong Kong Awards


Georgia’s In Bloom and Afghan drama The Patience Stone inset emerged as the winners last night at the closing of the 2013 Hong Kong International Film Festival 17 Mar – 2 Apr.
In Bloom, co-directed by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross, claimed the Firebird Award in the Young Cinema competition as well as the FIPRESCI Prize given by film critics.Asian film,The Patience Stone, the Afghanistan’s foreign-language Oscar contender, earned the SIGNIS prize for its humanitarian values.
The festival selected 20 titles to play in its short film competition and selected Night Shift as the winner of the Firebird Award. The short film jury commended the Zia Mandviwalla-directed film for “a sharp look for social differences… and for psychological details”, and said that it “describes in a cool and very precise way the everyday life of a cleaning woman in a big airport” with excellent camera work and outstanding performance from the protagonist.
Finally the festival concluded with the screening of Jafar Panahi’s Closed Curtain.
