DPS, Vasant Kunj mauled by Ashoknagar Vidyasagar Banibhaban

Bangalore, April 19, 2013: The boys from Kolkata’s Ashoknagar Vidyasagar Banibhaban maintained their excellent form on the field, winning their third match in a row by beating Delhi Public School from Vasant Kunj, New Delhi 3 – 2 in the inter-city leg of the 3rd Mahindra Youth Football Challenge at the Bangalore Football Stadium on Friday.

Shanu Majumder, Umesh Das and Santanu Debnath scored the Kolkata based school’s goals to power them to victory. Though Sanat Gupta’s twin goals did give Ashoknagar Vidyasagar Banibhaban some anxious moments, the promising team still won the contest by one goal to ensure they stay right on top. Although he did not score any goals, Delhi’s young Nachiketa Datt was awarded the Star Performer for a phenomenal effort on the field.

In other matches, Bangalore’s Greenwood International School went ahead to win their second match by defeating Calicut based St. Joseph’s Higher Secondary School 1 – 0. Playing on his home ground, Varun Nambiar scored for his team in the 48th minute of the match. The opponents were unable to open their account. Bangalore’s Aryamaan Singh Kunwar was recognized as the Star Performer.

Panjim’s Don Bosco High School registered their second victory by defeating their counterparts from Don Bosco High School, Matunga, Mumbai, 2 – 1. The real action began in the second half of the match when Bryce Mirandda scored the first goal for Mumbai. This was followed by Elmer Seaueira and Glevito S Miranda’s goals for Goa in the 36th and 46th minutes of the match, giving them the edge they needed to win. Glevito Miranda was the Star Performer.

India’s best under-14 football players from leading schools across six Indian cities are here to battle it out in the tournament.

The Mahindra Youth Football Challenge is the Mahindra Group’s commitment to promote football at the grassroots level. The company has partnered with Scottish football giant Celtic Football Club, who is taking on the responsibility of training and developing young talent identified through the initiative.
