Mori to visit Russia

Japan's former prime minister and an opposition heavyweight Yoshiro Mori has accepted a request to visit Russia to help resolve the longstanding territorial issue between the 2 countries.Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba asked Mori on Wednesday to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin over 4 Russian-held islands claimed by Japan. Mori has a personal relationship with Putin.

Gemba's request is seen as part of government efforts to resolve a standoff in the issue through Mori's personal ties, along with ordinary diplomatic exchanges.Gemba made the request ahead of his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in the southern Russian city of Sochi on Saturday. Gemba is also likely to meet Putin. The territorial issue is likely to top the agenda in these meetings.Mori, who recently announced he would not run in the next election, expressed willingness to cooperate.
