Thailand bans Shakespeare

on April 6, 2012 Thai Ministry of Culture’s Office of Film and Video said that the film “undermines the unity of people in the country” and that the censorship committee had refused it permission to screen in Thailand. The committee was headed by Police Major General Anek Samplang.

Shakespeare Must Die is set in a fictitious country and sees a popular politician use black magic to climb to power and violence to cling to it.
The film-makers say that the reasons given to them for the ban were very broad and not limited to an offensive scene. They say they will appeal against the decision.
