Caribbean Community and Common Market meet
Heads of governments of the Caribbean Community and
Common Market (CARICOM) on Thursday convened in Paramaribo, Surinam's
capital, to discuss important regional issues including economic
cooperation, security and sustainable development.The chairman of the 23rd Inter-sessional Meeting of CARICOM Heads of
Government, Surinam's President Desire D. Bouterse, said that a sense of
ownership, dedication and strong leadership is required in CARICOM in
order to respond to current international crises.
"The CARICOM must lead us to a better way of doing things, a faster response to false starts and wrong directions and, more importantly, to the meaningful and effective participation of our citizens in all areas and throughout the entire Region, when global economic anxiety is so high," said Bouterse in his speech at the opening ceremony of the two-day meeting, which attracted the heads of government and officials of the 15 member states.
