Wild weather halts Posco land acquisition

Orissa, land acquisition for the Rs 52,000-crore Posco steel project near Paradip of Jagatsinghpur district has been stopped till Monday due to adverse weather conditions.Additional District Magistrate of Paradip, Saroj Kant Choudhury told AIR that if weather conditions were favourable on Monday, the administration would go ahead with land acquisition process in the trouble-turned Dhinkia and Gobindpur areas.

Earlier this morning, land acquisition officials and a large number of security forces reached near Kujanga, even as hundreds of villagers, including school children, women and elderly people under the banner of the Posoco Pratirodh Sangram Samiti (PPSS), congregated at the outskirts of Gobindpur braving rain to defend forceful acquisition of their farm land for the project.

Meanwhile, eminent social activist Swami Agnivesh is sitting on a dharna inside a forest in Gobindpur protesting forceful acquisition of land by the State Government for the Posco project.

A delegation of the Congress party is likely to visit the project site this afternoon to provide moral support to the agitating villagers, while a BJP delegation will be visiting the area on Sunday.

Apart from the ruling BJD, all political parties have been backing the agitating anti-Posco activists and the villagers.
