Anand Sharma Inaugurates "India Show" at Baselworld in Switzerland
Anand Sharma, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry inaugurated the Baselworld Fair in Switzerland along with Swiss Home Minister Federal Councillor Mr. Didier Burkhalter at Basel Switzerland on 24th March, 2011. Shri Sharma on this occasion stated that, “Out of 12 diamonds processed in the world, 11 are processed in India’. India is the global leader in the diamonds and coloured gemstone sector, and is looking forward to greater investment by the world’s top watch and jewellery brands into the country.” India has been honoured as the guest country in this year’s Baselworld fair, which is the premiere Fair in the watches and Gem and Jewellery sector in the world, he added. India, with its 1.2 billion aspiring population, offers limitless opportunities for manufacturing as well as a market, assured the Minister. Later during the day, Shri Sharma met with CEOs of top watch brands like Rolex, Tag Hueuer, Tissot, Chopard, Swatch, Raymond Weil, etc.
On 25th March 2011, Union Minister of Commerce & Industry Anand Sharma met Swiss Minister of Economy, Mr. Johann Schneider Ammann, in Berne. Both Ministers discussed a range of issues including quality market access for Indian pharmaceuticals, Doha Round, and progress of the India-EFTA BTIA negotiations. Minister Sharma invited Swiss participation in the agro sector and in providing training in skills to the large young Indian population. Shri Sharma later reiterated role of Indian generics in providing good quality but affordable medical care to Asian, South American and African societies. Later Shri Sharma also held bilateral talks with Swiss Home Minister, Federal Councillor Mr. Didier Burkhalter, where both Ministers resolved to consolidate the existing bilateral engagement between India and Switzerland.
The India Show is coordinated by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council and has a participation of over 60 companies showcasing Indian design and craftsmanship in Switzerland. After the recent inauguration of the Bharat Diamond Bourse in Mumbai, by Shri Sharma, India now boasts of state-of-the-art infrastructure in diamond trading and is acknowledged world leader in the diamond cutting and polishing sector.Shri Sharma was felicitated by the Basel Cantonal Government for his outstanding contribution and dynamism in governance.
