Wen to Ma's second anniversary in power .

2010-05-13 09:45:45 - Democratic Progressive Party Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen in her blog wrote three suggestions for Ma, on President Ma's second anniversary in power on May 20.

Opposition Democratic Progressive Party Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen wrote an open letter to President Ma Ying-jeou Wednesday calling on him to propagate a "clear national image" for Taiwan as well as to interact with China.

Chairwoman Tsai Ing-wen in the letter published on her blog, Tsai said the people of Taiwan would find it hard to celebrate Ma's second anniversary in power
on May 20.If Ma was only interested in promoting relations with China but sacrificing Taiwan's international image, then it would result in disastrous consequences for the country, she said. The president should spend each moment thinking about ruling the country, not about elections, she said. However, over the past two years, Ma used official motorcades to travel everywhere on election campaign trips, while his policies often changed by 180 degrees, according to Tsai.

Ma also blurred the line between party and government, turning Cabinet units into public relations departments for the KMT and putting marketing above effective government, the opposition leader said.

Tsai said she had three suggestions for Ma. The first was to stop campaigning and to start ruling in order to make the public feel there was a government for them. Her second suggestion was that Ma should establish a firewall to protect the people against being swept away by change. It was clear from his urge to go ahead with the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement with China that he had not built such a firewall, Tsai said, accusing the government of treating the public as white mice in an experiment.

"The people are not white mice, they do not want to be experimented on and they cannot be experimented on. They should at least have the right to decide whether they want to participate in the experiment," Tsai said in her letter.

The DPP leader's third suggestion was to make Taiwan as important in government policies as relations with China.

Under Ma, Taiwan was coming to the point where there was only one choice, developing relations with China to the point that the coming generations would be unable to say no to that country, she said. In a democracy, there should be at least two choices, according to Tsai.

The opposition leader said the DPP would not stand by and drop its right to supervise government policies.

Tsai and Ma held a televised debate about ECFA on April 25. The opposition leader has also encouraged DPP members and supporters to take part in a three-day anti-ECFA protest scheduled to start on Ma's anniversary in power on May 20.

The president wants Taiwan and China to sign the accord next month, while the DPP and other ECFA critics want to give the public an opportunity to vote in a referendum.
