Gorbachev forges Union of Social Democrats
Former president of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev founded the Union of Social Democrats in Moscow on Saturday in an attempt to lead Russia towards a social democratic path.
Some 200 people from 58 Russian regions took part in the constituent congress of the union, which was, as claimed, aimed at eliminating the extremities of left-wing and right-wing forces and building an integrated society.
"The Western countries found the solution (in combining left- wing and liberal values)," Gorbachev said, taking the coalition of Social Democrats and Christian Democrats in Germany as an example.
It's the former president and Communist Party chief's second attempt to lead his country towards a social democratic path.
In 2000, he founded the Russian United Social Democratic Party, which grouped a number of other social democratic parties and organizations in 2001 and was renamed to the Social Democratic Party of Russia (SDPR).
In May 2004 Gorbachev stepped down as the SDPR leader and the party was abolished last summer as it failed to meet the requirements of the legislation on political parties.
Russia will hold parliamentary elections in early December.
