Japan to invest $25 billion in India: Suresh Prabhu
Noting that Indo-Japan ties have reached a new level, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu has said that Japan has committed to invest USD 25 billion in India and the country will benefit immensely from the investment.
“The relation between India and Japan has never been better. Our bilateral relation has been strengthened and members of parliament have contributed towards it,” Prabhu said while releasing coffee-table book ’12 Years of Engaged Leadership: Down the Memory Lane.’ The book contains photographs and gist/focus of meetings held during parliamentary delegation visits to Japan.
Brazil’s Supreme Court has announced that the final impeachment trial of suspended President Dilma Rousseff will be held on August 25th. On August 10th, the Senate voted 59-21 to move ahead with the trial, after a recommendation to do so by its impeachment committee. A vote by two-thirds of the 81 senators, are needed for Rousseff to be impeached and permanently removed from office. Rousseff was temporarily suspended for up to 180 days on May 12th and her Vice-President, Michel Temer, took over the presidency on an interim basis.
United States, an imam and another unidentified person were shot in the head near a mosque in Queens neighbourhood of New York, police said. Both men were taken to a nearby a hospital, where 55 year old imam Maulama Akonjee, was pronounced dead, a spokesman with New York’s Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Public Information said. The unidentified male, age 64, later succumbed to his injuries. The motive of the killing was not clear. Police spokesman said there is nothing in the preliminary investigation to indicate that they were targeted because of their faith.
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj held discussion with her Chinese counterpart Wang Yi in New Delhi yesterday. Sources in the Ministry said the two leaders discussed India’s Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) membership at length during the three-hour long meeting. Mrs Swaraj offered to discuss any technical issues which China may have regarding India’s membership in the elite group. She outlined importance of meeting India’s clean energy goals in the context of Paris Climate Conference.
The Minister conveyed India’s concerns on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor which passes through Pak Occupied Kashmir. The two Ministers also reviewed the situation on the border and steps to strengthen peace and tranquility along it. The issue of China’s technical hold on listing of Masood Azhar in the UN as a terrorist was also taken up.
Earlier, Mr Yi called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and briefed him on the G-20 Summit to be held in China next month.
